Do you mind explaining the attraction of square photos? I believe it's a throwback to film isn't it?

Well, I don't think it's a throwback thing, but more a matter of personal preference. In general, I use an abstract style of urban photography and tend to like to center my subjects. The square format helps me compose pictures more effectively and balance the frame better.

So do you think more common ratios don't work for you because they give more space then you need, while there square gives something more focused?

Something of the kind, but it all depends on the subject;) ~90% of my work is in square format.

I see, so is that something you do in camera, an aspect ratio feature you can adjust beforehand?

DSLRs not offer the option to use the square format in-camera while shooting. But I shoot and compose with this in mind and previsualize my 'square'-photo, then I crop in postprocess.
